Thank you!

Dear Devotees,

This year’s Govardhan Retreat is over – unfortunately. Fortunately, though, thanks to Adipurusha Prabhu’s tireless efforts to please the Vaishavas, we have ongoing access to some of the nectar shared during the retreat. In addition to the lecture excerpts we will also post links to the recordings soon. Please keep checking the blog!

Thank you all for giving your precious time and attention to Krishna Katha! And again, thank you Adipurusha Prabhu, for sharing what was spoken about with all of us!

Jay Giriraj Maharaj!

Questions and answers. Summary and parting words.

ImageWhat do to if we have envy towards Krsna’s pastimes?

Bhurijan Prabhu: If we have false ego, it means we WILL have envy to Krsna’s central position (or to Radhrani’s)… So we need to work on removing the false ego through the process of Krsna consciousness…

For staying in Vrndavana dhama for a long time, how not to start thinking it is an ordinary place?

Jagattarini Mataji: I also stayed in the dhama for a long time but I always had a lot of service and that service was not even always so directly connected with Krsna[katha] like in this Govardhan retreat. The main question is, “For whose pleasure am I staying in the dhama – for Srila Prabhupada’s service or for your own satisfaction?”

… You can develop the introspection and always feel grateful for being in the dhama. This gratefulness will protect you.

***

When we chant in separation, we focus on what we DON’T have. When I chant in gratitude for having been brought here I am happy. So should I chant like this or switch to separation?

Madhavananda Prabhu: KC is a very personal process. We cultivate the feeling of union with Krsna. “How can we cultivate the mood of separation if I have never met Krsna?” – We can meet Krsna through His representative. And when he leaves we can feel separation. We also cultivate atma-krandana, the cry of the soul. The yajna-brahmanas failed because they were doing something mechanical, the yajna-patnis were hearing and remembering with their hearts. KC is about personal relationship. …

When is one eligible to hear rasa-lila? When one is eligible to speak rasa-lila? Under what circumstances should it be spoken?

Jagattarini Mataji: Sometimes Srila Prabhupada would give very strong warnings, at other times he said that without hearing about Krsna’s pastimes, you won’t be able to remove the unwanted things in the heart…

So, when is one eligible to hear? – when we have a sincere desire.  …

Bhurijan Prabhu: Prabhupada gave us Krsna book very very early- in the 70s, he wanted the devotees to meet Krsna .. and was afraid he would not be able to finish the Bhagavatam with the Krsna-lila. … In the beginning that is how devotees would read: from beginning to end.

The natural *key* is reading FROM BEGINNING TO THE END, unless we are extremely qualified, we should read inkrama, in a sequence.

Why should we chant 16 rounds, why not 8?

Sacinandana Swami: According to love of God’s incarnation if one has not chanted 64 rounds, one is fallen and Gauranga does not accept food from someone who has not chanted 64 rounds- that means no food for you :-)   … It was the standard in the Gaudiya line. … When Srila Prabhupada came to the West, that was the number he had in his mind … [Mukunda Maharaja’s recounting his experience with Srila Prabhupada telling him to chant 64 rounds. “OK, 16 round and not less”].

“The Krsna consciousness movement prescribes sixteen rounds daily because people in the Western countries cannot concentrate for long periods while chanting on beads. Therefore the minimum number of rounds is prescribed. However, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura used to say that unless one chants at least sixty-four rounds of japa (one hundred thousand names), he is considered fallen (patita). According to his calculation, practically every one of us is fallen, but because we are trying to serve the Supreme Lord with all seriousness and without duplicity, we can expect the mercy of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who is famous as patita-pavana, the deliverer of the fallen.”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => NoI: verse 5

You can say, What is Srila Prabhupada doing, he is changing the tradition, is it OK? Yes, it is OK, he is the acarya. In fact, to know what is the proper duty for a specific group and time is the what the acarya sets. Krsna comes to the disciple through the acarya’s method given to him.

“O Lord, who resemble the shining sun, You are always ready to fulfill the desire of Your devotee, and therefore You are known as a desire tree [vancha-kalpataru]. When acaryas completely take shelter under Your lotus feet in order to cross the fierce ocean of nescience, they leave behind on earth the method by which they cross, and because You are very merciful to Your other devotees, You accept this method to help them.”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.2.31

So whether 64 rounds, or 16, or 1, this is up to the acarya’s discretion, questioning that would mean questioning the mind of the great soul. I know that 16 rounds for the Hare Krsna movement in 2012 is a challenge. I have heard this is a challenge. We have many who are up to 64 rounds a day, this is a hidden success story in our movement. But when we give japa retreats, we know, why people come – because they know, they either don’t always chant 16 rounds or don’t chant them satisfactorily. And we are not to point fingers at them, it is about establishing priorities in life. When a child suffers, he does not think, “Now I have to say the mother’s name” – no, this is a priority, it comes automatically.

It is our hope in these retreats to inspire the devotees that Krsna is attractive and beautiful, [you will feel you want to chant].

… Bhaktisiddhanta S.T. says that just like Krsna is always associated with His svarupa-sakti Srimati Radharani, so our hari-nama chanting must always be associated with Krsna-katha, then Krsna’s name will dance ecstatically on your tongue.

Gunavatara Prabhu: [Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati T. about a householder: “Yes, I know he is in the mood of chanting of 64 rounds].

Should we have self-love?

Madhavananda Prabhu: In puja there is ahangrahopasana and even Krsna does that : – ) But, as devotees, we don’t beat ourselves, … but we take all as mercy of our gurus…

Even demigods cannot recognize a Vaisnava (vaisnave cihnite nahi devera sakati – from Jagadananda “Prema-vaivarta”). Just like an ant in this pandal can understand that something is happening but not the intricacies of what it is going on here…

***

If Indra is so proud and has such difficulty learning his lesson then what is the hope for me?

Jagattarini Mataji: Sometimes we think that KC is something so difficult, even Indra can’t achieve it, as if it is a huge mountain and not any person can reach the top, a few people can make it, but definitely not me. So here another analogy is required: There is a deep deep well, into which we have somehow fallen, and someone has passed a rope into that well and asks us just to hold on. But even that may seem hard. But if with the help of others we can hold on and come out of that dark place and see how the light of KC is our natural place. Our natural state is being attracted to Krsna. We are hopeful because it is already there in all of us, we simply have to hold on and follow the process.

***

These days gave my lots of hope, experience and something like love for Krsna. How can I see Krsna in His original form? Is it the same like seeing Krsna’s picture or murti-vigraha? If this is a foolish question, please forgive me.

Sacinandana Swami: Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami says there are three forms:

Svarupa (own original form), arca-vigraha (Deity), name – and they are absolutely non-different.

Our philosopher scholars have studied these three forms and have concluded that Krsna in His name is even more merciful than His svarupa form. In His svarupa Krsna appears only in a totally purified heart, full of bhava and prema, but the name is willing to appear and sweep our heart, make it pure. Krsna in His name form takes the role of a ‘street-sweeper’ or ‘heart-sweeper’ so we can have darsan of Him. So if you want to see Krsna in His svarupa original form, then I recommend that you become a scientist in chanting the Holy Name.

This question brings a lot of heart and intellectual tension. It is for Bhurijan Prabhu.

“Bhurijan Prabhu talked many times about incredible beauty of Vrndavan. But I have not seen it. I have felt something. He said all is dead outside Vrndavan. I see majesty in mountains and rivers and the sprawling fields … Should I learn not to see the heaps of plastic, and be happy when robbed by local boys, the all pervading smell of sewage. I am sorry for my heart.”

Bhurijan Prabhu: I was just waiting for someone to ask this question! : – )

If one sees the beauty in the mountains and rivers and the sprawling fields and if one just gets a glimpse of Vrndavan, then one can just imagine how much more is there in Vrndavan. That is the positive.

Regarding the plastic, robbing, the sewage etc. – there are many places that are free from that! And they are not even far. Just walk through the mustard fields or go up the Yamuna. You can walk with someone else, or not take your computer, mobile and dress as a wealthy Westerner, and just sit and absorb. Pray to the dust of Vrndavan. You can feel humble, “This is my heart, what should I do?” Should I start picking up plastic? We can bring our prayers to the Giriraj and ask for response.

And yet it is such a sad thing: so many things have been lost or covered by the mobile towers, plastic, concrete etc. Yet, the beauty is also there. And good efforts are being made. There are many many devotees who are doing something to counteract the plastic etc and if you ask them they can tell you how you can help.

Jagattarini Mataji: There two levels of Vrindavan: the covering film of praudha-maya, what you see and think, but there is also the real Vrindavan, and that can get revealed by hearing about the glory of Vrindavan. If you don’t hear about what is eternally taking place here you may be on the platform of a mundane well-wisher of the drisyamana, visible Vrndavan, but we won’t enter the real eternal Vrindavan. That takes place only by sincere hearing…

Sacinandana Swami: Thank you very much for your questions! The basket is still full with your questions but we have to move on to the next section of our program, which Bhurijan Prabhu will introduce. Thank you very much!

***

Three questions we would like to ask you:

1. What was your most memorable unforgettable moment of the GR?

2. What realizations, deepest thoughts would like to take home from GR?

3. What can you do, when you arrive at your home that can best insure that you can keep what you’d like to bring home from the retreat?

[Devotees sharing realizations]

***

Madhavananda Prabhu: First I would like to thank Sacinandana Maharaj and Bhurijan Prabhu for bringing us here and allow us to serve. This is a highlight for me and Krsna-kund.

We were speaking about the lila of the yajna-patnis and the philosophical side…

Bhaktivinoda Thakura – This represents devotees controlled by the people with low level of faith. ..The first door we come through is usually a church … but we want to go to Vraja. The brahma-patnis went to Krsna and when they came back, their husbands were bewildered, “How was this possible, these ladies never got diksa, never lived in the guru’s asrama, how could they have attained Krsna?” They overlooked that they did sravana-kirtanam.

Krsna says:

sravanad darsanad dhyanan

mayi bhavo ‘nukirtanat

na tatha sannikarsena

pratiyata tato grhan

It is by hearing about Me, seeing My Deity form, meditating upon Me and chanting My names and glories that love for Me develops, not by physical proximity. Therefore please go back to your homes.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.34

Krsna SENT the wives back. In “Laghu-Vaisnava-Tosani” Sri Jiva Gosvami says that AFTER the brahma-patnis returned, those yajnas became successful. We are coming to the retreat to have the direct darsan, but then we go back….

Once my Guru Maharaj asked, “What is KC movement? Who has joined?” Then he pointed to me and said, “Madhavananda – not joined.” : – )

The yajnas of the brahmanas had some value. The brahma-patnis became gopis in Vrndavan. But what happened to thebrahmanas? Sukadeva Gosvami says:

iti  svagham anusmrtya

krsne te krta-helanah

didrksavo vrajam atha

kamsad bhita na cacalan

Thus reflecting on the sin they had committed by neglecting Lord Krsna, they became very eager to see Him. But being afraid of King Kamsa, they did not dare go to Vraja.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.52

They did not go.

My spiritual master said … that in a KC society there are different levels. There is a management level and we mustcooperate, … but the essential level is the holy name. We should understand, “If I go to the retreat and improve my japa, I am helping this movement”. If we improve our japa, go deeper in Krsna-katha we are helping the whole movement.

Brahmanas had the fault of niyamagraha. … Mechanical chanting…

Baladeva Vidyabhusana says there are 3 levels of faith: sanistha “I must follow these material rules”, parinisthita is higher, [who has more faith in bhakti] and then nirapeksa, who may or may not follow the social rules.

The essence of the whole Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu is expressed in one verse:

anyabhilasita-sunyam

jnana-karmady-anavrtam

anukulyena krsnanu-

silanam bhaktir uttama

In “Durgama-sang.” Sri Jiva Gosvami explains that there are 3 kinds of jnana: about the soul, the Lord, and oneness, and only the third is detrimental. And karmadi is varnasrama – to think that “if I don’t follow these rules I cannot get bhakti”. Butbhaktya sanjataya bhaktya – bhakti comes from bhakti. Although the yajna-patnis were married to those fellows, … [they were hearing and chanting] and they were brought to the ashoka grove and this is the process: we realize, that Krsna is a person, my guru is a person and I am also a person. … We cannot jump to it (the pressure cooker has to gather steam) – … the yajna-patnis were crying for a long time, but then they met Krsna.

..

Vaisnava sanga is not only the speaker, but also those wonderful devotees who lend their ears to Krsna-katha.

..

I want to thank again Jagattarini Mataji, Bhurijan Prabhu, Sacinandana Swami for tolerating me and letting me do a little humble service and get this Vaisnava-sanga.

Jagattarini Mataji:

This year preparing “Dana-keli-kaumudi” I felt a little nervous. I was going back to the Folio to see if Srila Prabhupada would be happy by my presenting it. Then

“…To go to Vrndavana means to understand the transcendental pastimes of Radha and Krsna. How this will be possible? So he says, rupa-raghunatha-pade hoibe akuti. Rupa, Rupa Gosvami, beginning from Rupa Gosvami down to Raghunatha dasa Gosvami, there were Six Gosvamis: Rupa, Sanatana, Gopala Bhatta, Raghunatha Bhatta, Jiva Gosvami, Raghunatha dasa Gosvami. So he says, rupa-raghunatha-pade: “Beginning from Rupa Gosvami down to Raghunatha dasa Gosvami,” pade, “in their lotus feet, at their lotus feet. When I shall be eager to be attached at their lotus feet…” Rupa-raghunatha-pade, hoibe akuti. Akuti, eagerness. What is that eagerness? That means to understand Radha-Krsna through the guidance of the Gosvamis. One should not try to understand Radha-Krsna by his own effort. That will not help him. As these Gosvamis, they have given us direction, just like Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu, so one has to follow step after step how to make progress. Then there will be a fortunate day when we shall be able to understand what is the pastimes or loving affairs between Radha and Krsna…”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => Purport to Gauranga Bolite Habe – Los Angeles, January 5, 1968

Then Srila Prabhupada said: Don’t take it as ordinary boy and girls reciprocating their loving feelings.

I realized it will be successful only if done for the pleasure of Giriraja, Srila Prabhupada and the assembled devotees.

It is quite difficult to speak about these things when one lives back in those metropolises.

… Therefore it very important to learn the sadhana of hearing.

…When has to learn the property of humility … to receive the pastimes from those who have realized them and hand them down to us…

As a person and as a devotee I cannot get away from the fact that we have to go home. And there is no way to go home unless we become eager to go, and it is not possible to become eager unless we hear! … Thank you very much for hearing and for your reciprocation.

In taking the well-spoken words of the devotees and the experience of the increased KC we have all achieved in this place by its mercy … to describe it is not possible, but we can say

This is the essence and simple secret of the Govardhan Retreat – that we should hear and chant in the association of the devotees. Yet, it is special to be near the Giriraj with so many devotees – Krsna manifests Himself among the devotees sincerely hearing and chanting. In preparing on this 46th chapter about Uddhava’s visit to Vrindavan I have seen how Srila Prabhupada includes the commentaries of the acaryas. He writes:

“Since Krsna had departed from Vrndavana and gone to Mathura, the inhabitants of Vrndavana, especially Mother Yasoda, Nanda Maharaja, Srimati Radharani, the gopis and the cowherd boys, were simply thinking of Krsna at every step. They were thinking, “Here Krsna was playing in this way. Here Krsna was blowing His flute. Krsna was joking with us in this way, and Krsna was embracing us like this.” This is called lila-smarana, and it is the process of association with Krsna most recommended by great devotees; even Lord Caitanya, when He was at Puri, enjoyed lila-smarana association with Krsna.

[-and this was the methodology of Nanda Maharaja to open channel between aprakata and prakata Vrndavan – the feeling of missing Krsna, “Only if Krsna were here” – this is how they could associate with Krsna. So this is how to take the retreat home. Here we like that taste it is sweet, that is natural, and when we go home we’ll miss it. “Even Lord Caitanya, when He was at Puri, enjoyed lila-smarana association with Krsna.”  In Brhad-bhagavtamrta (Kesava Bharati Maharaj who edited it, helped me understand this passage precisely) Sanatana Gosvami says that without the kirtan of the names the lila [and qualities of Krsna that we hear and read] will not open in the mind. Very important part is chanting the holy names. By continuously chanting we make our consciousness most receptive and then by hearing … we approach Krsna -]

“Those in the most exalted position of devotional service and ecstasy can live with Krsna always by remembering His pastimes. Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura has given us a transcendental literary work entitled Krsna-bhavanamrta, which is full with Krsna’s pastimes. Exalted devotees can remain absorbed in Krsna-thought by reading such books. Any book of krsna-lila, even this book, Krsna, or our Teachings of Lord Caitanya, is actually solace for devotees feeling separation from Krsna.”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => KB 46: Uddhava Visits Vrndavana

It is where we actually we belong – here – and missing that we can find Krsna very easily, and by reading Krsna-book, Caitanya-caritamrta … we can be with Krsna again.

(1) Be a servant. The greatest obstacle in our KC is reverting or keeping our enjoying attitude instead of being a servant (“Don’t try to see God but act so He sees you”).

(2) We should serve, aspire, but not imitate. We should be very careful and proceed appropriately.

(3) Hear and chant ABOUT KRSNA in the association of devotees.

Sacinandana Swami

The best way is to recount my most memorable experience. As you know, just before this retreat we had a holy name retreat in Varsana just 3 days before, and it was a little fast for me. I thought, “Let us give our best”.  I was a little passionate about ending the retreat nicely, I felt happy about how everything went every well, for the first time I felt confident speaking about Krsna to the large international group of devotees. And all of a sudden I learn that I have offended a senior devotee. This whole morning I was trying 5 phone numbers and every time it was a wrong number. I was trying to call and apologize but couldn’t get through and became desperate. And part of me still thought I was not wrong, but the point is that the devotee was hurt. Then I had the intelligence to look at Giriraj and understood: Giriraja has arranged this, because my katha was about Indra who for 7 days could not understand that he had made a mistake. So I was not only telling the katha, but also Krsna decided to teach me. We have acknowledge a mistake and then apologize. I told you, I lost the goodness mood and a devotee felt hurt, I know this devotee is very merciful – I just hope I get the right number now.

Krsna is very personal. … You remember the Kaliya-damana-lila? At the end Kaliya’s wives say:

“O Lord, we do not know how the serpent Kaliya has attained this great opportunity of being touched by the dust of Your lotus feet. For this end, the goddess of fortune performed austerities for centuries, giving up all other desires and taking austere vows.”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.16.36

I meditated on it when I read this this morning. You have all touched the dust near Giriraja… It will stay on your head… How did this happen for you, Nitya Prabhu? How did this mercy happen? How did you even get a visa in your country?

It was only that in the past Kaliya was compassionate and respectful – Krsna likes when His devotees are compassionate and respectful – because Kaliya got this dust we must speculate that he was compassionate and respectful to others.

So as you go home, why don’t you be compassionate and respectful and affectionate to all? It pleases Krsna.

Sri Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura says in his commentary: When a devotee respects everyone the Lord becomes satisfied. [?4.11.13, 4.31.19, 6.4.13…]

Isn’t it a wonderful thing to remember as you go home?

Even the person who sweeps your house is under the shelter of Krsna feet. Krsna extends the shelter of His lotus feet to all.

You can start with the devotees around you and not judge them – to please Krsna! Then Krsna will be pleased with you….

What do you think about this program? – “HARIBOL!” – I am convinced that half of those who said Haribol will forget about this when they take prasadam now.

Please, practice this and your whole life will change and the lives around you will change.

You heard Krsna-katha – it is only the beginning, more and more will come over the years. Please, don’t disconnect yourself from Krsna-katha but remain connected to Krsna-katha. You can do this by hearing the recordings of inspiring Krsna-katha or reading Srimad-Bhagavatam.

Apply the three steps we discussed: sravanam (hearing), mananam (reflecting), nididhyasanam (applying)

Bhurijan Prabhu – Day 6

**Uddhava’s arguments about Krsna’s Godhood only increase Nanda Maharaja’s prema**

Bhurijan Prabhu

How is it possible to understand the mood of separation of the Brijbasis without the equivalent amount of love for Krsna. Of course, it is not possible.

… Here are some mundane poems about love in separation. Rupa Gosvami heard one such mundane love poem recited in Ratha-yatra by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and composed a parallel poem expressing Lord Gauranga’s mood.

This one is especially similar to Siksastaka: ~love considers hours – months, and days – years~

To die and part is less evil,

But to live and part there there is the torment

“Absence diminishes mediocre passions and increases great ones, as the wind extinguishes candles and fans fires”

We fill our lives with distractions, but when we finish the list of things to do, what will we do? Of course, we never finish, we keep adding to the list.

So much of the mood of preaching that Srila Prabhupada had was, Use your life properly, it is a rare opportunity!Opportunity for what? To increase our fire of desire for Krsna, making it a blazing fire, a necessity “I have to develop a relationship with Krsna!” And this is so difficult – for me.

As long as the student is moving forward – that is a teachers definition of success. If we are moving forward, we are doing well. If the material desires are decreasing, we are doing well. If at some point Krsna opens the door – we can walk into it. At some point before we leave the body, we want our relationship develop to the degree that we will hold to Krsna tightly at this most difficult of times.

No artificialness, just move forward, keep good association, serve Srila Prabhupada’s followers who have taken up the mission of spreading KC.

Seeing the intense absorption of Nanda and Yasoda, Uddhava thinks, “This is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. This is THE perfection. I have never seen anything higher than this”. He is looking somewhat from the point of view of Krsna’s aisvarya, being the Absolute Truth. But the power of their sweetness like a hurricane moves aside everything, tivrena. In the same way if one performs bhakti with tivra, obstacles are removed.

They think, “If we don’t feed Krsna, He will be hungry”, during the Govardhana-lila she thinks, “He is so thin”. When the cowherd men are shown Vaikuntha and Krsna praised by the Vedas and demigods, they want to run and embrace Him and He wants to embrace them. The unrestrained, obstacle-free path of KC comes from the increase of our desire. The epitome of this are Nanda & Yasoda, and of course the Vraja-gopikas.

Uddhava says, “You have reached the perfection of samadhi worked for by the yogis in the Himalayas for hundreds of years”.

“Infallible Krsna, the Lord of the devotees, will soon return to Vraja to satisfy His parents.”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.46.34

When you tell a child, “Don’t worry the class will end in a 5 minutes” – they are not pacified, because they have no concept of time. So in the intensity of love of Nanda and Yasoda the word “soon” is like a sword. This is Sri Visvanatha C.T’s commentary:

“O dear Uddhava! I have heard you are very intelligent, but now I see you are foolish because you have simply praised us. Oh, who is there in the three worlds more unfortunate than us, from whose house such a wonderful son has gone away? We are the object of scorn for all!”

Anticipating this statement, Uddhava says, “Acyuta (not falling from, not breaking his promise), will come very soon to Vraja. Functioning just as protector of the Yadus (satvanam patih), he will remain here, and fulfill all of your desires (priyam vidhasyate).”

Krsna is already fulfilling this promise in His aprakata-lila, and by their intense separation in prakata-lila Nanda and Yasoda feel Krsna’s association in the aprakata-lila.

Krsna left the city of Mathura to meet Nanda because the Vrsnis continuously kept Krsna busy (O there is this marriage, there is this function).

They were embarrassed to stand in front of Nanda. They knew that if Krsna went there once He would never return.

After killing Sisupala Krsna came with the whole entourage to Dvaraka (ch.78) and normally He would need to ask permission from Ugrasena before moving on, but then the news of Dantavakra attack came and (because forgiveness is easer to ask for than permission) Krsna immediately went there, and after that, being near Mathura, came to Vrndavan and camped there for two months with all the Vrajavasis.

“O most fortunate ones, do not lament. You will see Krsna again very soon. He is present in the hearts of all living beings, just as fire lies dormant in wood.”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.46.36

Uddhava has no experience of their bhakti and so his arguments have no power.

Very revelatory comments:

Sri Jiva Gosvami:

“…When Uddhava said that Kåñëa would return VERY SOON, Yasoda glanced at him [probably glaringly].  Uddhava saw that glance and exclaimed, “O fortunate ones!” fearing that they could not tolerate even a little delay in Kåñëa’s coming, Uddhava then began teaching them, following the customary way  of relieving lamentation.  Kåñëa exists even within the minds of all beings as Paramatma, what to speak of existing outside of them. An example is given to show how he has an aprakaöa nature. In being bound by ropes and in eating dirt as well as other pastime, only Yasoda could see his all-pervasive nature.  Others did not realize this fact and thus he does not appear within them.  But he remains manifesting himself within you two at all times. Why do you need his external manifestation?  But if you desire that, that will certainly take place soon. As Paramätmä exists in all beings invisibly, fire exists in wood invisibly. Similarly Kåñëa exists near you invisibly. You see him in the manifestation of Goloka and he sees you close up.  You see him also through the mind. And very soon you will see him with your eyes also.”

Sri Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura: “36. “Oh, so great is our misfortune that there is delay in our truthful son coming to Vraja.” To answer the lamenting parents,  Uddhava replies with this verse.

“You should not lament.  Very soon you will be able to see Krsna.”

“You say we will see him,  but when will that be, tomorrow,  the next day, or ten days later? With some consolation, we will keep our life airs from leaving our bodies till that day.  But if he is not coming, you should tell us truthfully.  As it is difficult to prevent the life airs from leaving, then let them leave.”

Uddhava, hearing Nanda speak like this,  then began to consider. “One should advise those who are suffering separation from their material sons in this way: ‘Why are you immersed in the illusion of family attachment like this? False attachment to wife and sons is a cause of trouble. Give that up and attach yourself to the Lord.’

“But how can I advise  Nanda, who is attached to the Lord as his son?  He is not like Vasudeva, who on seeing the godly powers of Krsna,  weakens his attachment to him as his son.  Rather, by showing them Krsna’s powers,  Nanda and Yasoda’s attachment to their son will become stronger.  They will think, ‘When parents lose sight of the son playing in their house, they die out of sorrow. By our good fortune, the Lord himself plays about as our son in our house. If we cannot care for him for even a moment, we lament. How will we live, not seeing that child in our house?  We are so unfortunate, having been separated from such a wonderful child.’ This is how Nanda and Yasoda feel.

Uddhava begain to consider:

“If I go to Mathura and bring Krsna here tomorrow, Jarasandha will come to destroy  Mathura, angry because Kamsa’s wives are left as widows. Who then will protect Vasudeva and the other Yadavas?  If Krsna then again goes to Mathura to protect them, then those in Vraja will certainly die. If I say that Krsna will come in four or five years, they will not be patient for that long.  If I lie and tell them that he will come in four or five days, when the time expires and they discover that I lied, they will die.

“As there is no other means, I will now weaken their relationship with Him, their prema, their love for Him by telling them that as Supersoul Krsna is everywhere and is neutral to everyone, as  impersonal Brahman he is without relationships with father, mother, body, karma or birth, and will teach some meditation on the soul to realize that. [-“I will weaken their prema”- that is his strategy, but he is very intelligent, so he says:] If on revealing all this, Nanda and Yasoda’s unlimited, unfathomable, uncontrollable prema increases even more, then I will go to Mathura and I will simply glorify their incomparable prema again and again to the assembly of Krsna, Vasudeva, Ugrasena and others and astonish them all. I should rather just criticize Krsna.”   Having made this decision  he then began to speak about Krsna as the Supersoul.

“Like fire within wood, Krsna is present within the hearts of all living beings. Then why can no one see him?  One does not see fire in wood without kindling it.  Krsna can also be seen by proper method.” [Krsna is not visible without devotion – that is what Nanda Maharaja heard from this verse; ‘friction is required’ and friction is rasa, some tension; when we come to KC we think it will bring us great peace; in Delhi on the BD vans it says “Read BG for an anxiety free life” and I think they must be reading a different version of BG: - ))) KesvaBharatiMahraj: A devotee asked Srila Prabhupada, how will I know if I am advancing – “By how much you are in anxiety for Krsna”]

Uddhava’s implication, they thought, was “If you did not perform devotional activities as vaisnavas for Krsna, your son, would he appear in your house?”

Nanda and Yasoda  then thought, “Some how or other Krsna must appear in our house. We must perform devotional service.”

… Padyavali … Radharani justifies apologetic Krsna…

Uddhava is preaching to them. For us this is helpful. For them it is like a drop of water thrown against a volcano.

“For Him no one is especially dear or despicable, superior or inferior, and yet He is not indifferent to anyone. He is free from all desire for respect and yet gives respect to all others.

“He has no mother, no father, no wife, children or other relatives. No one is related to Him, and yet no one is a stranger to Him. … He has no material body and no birth. …

“He has no work to do in this world … that would oblige Him to take birth in pure, impure or mixed species of life. Yet to enjoy His pastimes … and deliver His saintly devotees, He manifests Himself.

“Although beyond the three modes of material nature—goodness, passion and ignorance—the transcendental Lord accepts association with them as His play. Thus the unborn Supreme Lord utilizes the material modes to create, maintain and destroy.

[-karto’ham iti manyate, as an example of illusory energy forcing improper perception-]

“Just as a person who is whirling around perceives the ground to be turning, one who is affected by false ego thinks himself the doer, when actually only his mind is acting.

[If you actually think He is your son:]

“The Supreme Lord Hari is certainly not your son alone. Rather, being the Lord, He is the son, Soul, father and mother of everyone.

[He is everything! -]

“Nothing can be said to exist independent of Lord Acyuta [reminding of His promise] —nothing heard or seen, nothing in the past, present or future, nothing moving or unmoving, great or small. He indeed is everything, for He is the Supreme Soul.”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.46.38-4

In this way all night long they spoke, Uddhava spoke philosophy to Nanda M. hour after hour after hour.

“While Krsna’s messenger continued speaking with Nanda, the night ended”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.46.44

The second part introduces us to the Vraja-gopikas. But first a comment by Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura on this section (he invites us to understand the heart of a Brijbasi devotee):

“44. Nanda  and Uddhava spent the night in discussing among themselves. Uddhava  was not able pacify them however, and they could not accept his advice.  Then Nanda began to consider things in this way.

“Uddhava  wants  to enlighten us by saying the Krsna is the Supreme Lord.  Do we do not know that? At the time of his name giving ceremony, we heard from Garga ‘This son is similar to Narayana.’  Except for Narayana who can be similar or equal to him? Therefore from Garga we knew that our son is Narayana. We also realized our son to be Narayana, when he killed Putana, Agha, Baka, when he lifted Govardhana, when he quelled the forest fire and when the ruler of Varuna-loka offered respects. We also know that Narayana is paramatma and param brahman. Though we know that, we also know irrefutably that he is our son. The proof is Garga’s words. ‘O Nanda, this son of yours ….’ Nandatmajo ‘yam te

“From Garga’s words, though it is proved that Krsna is the Supreme Lord, when we treat him without reverence, and offer him our chewed betel nut, satisfaction appears in our minds. If he were not our son, our minds would not be satisfied. Before Krnsa’s birth, we could meditate on Narayana, our family deity.  But now, as soon as we meditate on Narayana, Narayana appears directly in front of us.  This is a sign of satisfaction of our minds.  Therefore acting like this in relation to our son is not a fault. We are certainly Krsna’s mother and father.

“Krsna’s own realization in this matter is also proof.  We have seen many times that if we do not give him the chewed betel nut, if we do not lift him on our lap, if we do not hold him to our chest and kiss him,  then his face becomes sad. If Yasoda were not his mother, how could she tie him up when he broke the yogurt pots? Seeing his miserable face when he was tied up, I released him and saw him become pleased.  Because we are his mother and father,  he accepted scolding, commands, and bondage even though he may be the Supreme Lord. How is it possible to bind up the para brahma, the Supreme Lord?

There is more, but I just wanted to speak of a very intimate pastime with Nanda and Yasoda. How Krsna steals their hearts and makes the ecstasy over-flood the banks. After Yasodamaya tied Krsna – afraid He would run away – she put boys on all sides to make sure there is no difficulty. Krsna was crying because He was tied up. As soon as mother Yasoda leaves, He starts laughing and playing with the boys. When Balarama saw Krsna tied up He was furious, “Who has done this, I will bring the universe down on him!”, – “Mother Yasoda…” , — “Oh no. Why do You always have to steal?” :- ) Balarama could not untie. Then Krsna pulled the mortar here and there. Krsna dragged the mortar to the houses of the gopis who lent the ropes to Yasoda and the boys stole butter from their houses : – ). Then He pulled it between the two huge Arjuna trees and they crashed down with tremendous sound. Brijbasis fainted in fear for Krsna. The cowherd boys with Krsna did not faint, because they witnessed the sweet pastime. But they were stunned and they saw the two effulgent personalities coming, praying and leaving. That took one muhurta. Then the Bribjasis awoke from their swoon and came running. Nanda Maharaja untied Krsna who was crying. Nanda M. smiled at Krsna, despite the danger to relieve the boy’s anxiety. He held Krsna and said, “O Krsna, who tied you up?” Krsna shook His head. “O Krsna, who tied you up?” – “Yasoda Ma”. Mother Yasoda came in anxiety and Nanda maharaja asked, “You have caused this?” Krsna put on his best angelic halo appearance holding tighter to Nanda Maharaj. Mother Yasoda was embarrassed. Krsna afterwards would not eat and speak to Yasoda. Nanda M. asked, “Do you want me to hit her?” Krsna said, “No”. Nanda M. took him to the Yamuna, gave him sweetened milk with rock candy, took him to lie in his bed, taught Him letters of alphabet. Then Rohini came and told Nanda M. “M. Yasoda is suffering so much”, – “Well, if someone gets angry, they should repent”, – “Rohini: Krsna, go to Your mother”, – “No”, – … Balarama also could not bring Krsna on Rohini’s request. Nanda M., of course, knew that Krsna has unlimited love for Yasoda. “Krsna, do you know that if Mother Yasoda does not see You, she will…” and He did not finish, indicated she would die. And Krsna immediately cried, “Mother, mother” rushed to Yasoda who was also crying. M. Yasoda did not come out of her house out of embarrassment for three days, till Nanda M. pulled her out by her sari.

So these are the waves, sancaris of love, not just santa-rasa, these are continuous experiences of the Vrajavasis. Krsna and Yogamaya are playing these ecstasies like instruments, so the residents of Vrindavan are diving into the ocean of bliss.

… When the gopis came to Krsna in the Vrndavan forest He sends them back home, and they are just scratching the ground with their toe-nails, till their pranaya comes out, complete frankness. Then they dance, this is just a continuous festival of love with Krsna. This is the kind of thing they are continuously experiencing. So Nanda M. says, “OK, he is the Supreme Lord, but He experiences pleasure when we feed Him our betel nuts”.

Sri Visvanatha continues: “But after he killed Canura and Kamsa in Mathura, everyone said, ‘Krsna, you are certainly the Supreme Lord.’  But then Devaki said, “I am your mother.”  Vasudeva said, “I am your father.”  Others said, “We are your uncles.”  And others said, “We are your brothers, your relatives, your friends.” When people, saying this, invited him to their houses, to keep him in Mathura, our son, the crest jewel of proper conduct, looking at their faces, fell in a terrible trap. Being unable to come back to his Vraja, being very benevolent, I suppose he said everyone, “I must be the Supreme Lord, the creator of the universe. Who can be my mother, who can be my father, who can be my relative?  Just look, in the scriptures it says, “I reside with that person who has devotion and with no one else.  In those houses where I reside, those people are my mothers and fathers.”’

“Though Uddhava has been very intelligent from childhood, he is unable to fathom the depths of my son’s heart and His moods. Taking the literal meaning of Krsna’s words as if they were the intentions of His own heart, Uddhava has come from Mathura and given us this advice. But my son said something very intelligent in those words. ‘They are my father and mother who show devotion to me. I reside in their houses.’  Therefore I am sending this message with Uddhava back toMathura to give to Krsna. ‘O Krsna, it is I who have devotion to your feet. Be merciful and be pleased with me, so that I can attain you by the devotional processes of hearing, chanting  remembering and offering obeisances.’

“Receiving this message, my son will walk into the assembly of the Yadavas and He will say, ‘O men of the Yadu dynasty, you are not able to perform devotional activities in Mathura, but Nanda is doing so. Therefore he is my father, he is my friend and he is my dear one.  I will go to his house.’  Saying this my son Krsna will come here.”

But at last, Nanda forgot all these deliberations, due to the influence of the sancari bhava of  misery (dainya). “

The night passed.

“The women of the cowherd village rose from bed and, lighting lamps, worshiped their household deities. Then they began churning the yogurt into butter.”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.46.44

Now again Yogama is showing the aprakata Vrindavana:

As they pulled on the churning ropes with their bangled arms, the women of Vraja shone with the splendor of their jewels, which reflected the lamps’ light. Their hips, breasts and necklaces moved about, and their faces, anointed with reddish kunkuma, glowed radiantly with the luster of their earrings reflecting from their cheeks.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.46.46

As the ladies of Vraja loudly sang the glories of lotus-eyed Krsna, their songs blended with the sound of their churning, ascended to the sky and dissipated all inauspiciousness in every direction.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.46.46

And then the aprakata-lila is withdrawn.

When the godly sun had risen, the people of Vraja noticed the golden chariot in front of Nanda Maharaja’s doorway. “Who does this belong to?” they asked.

“Perhaps Akrura has returned — he who fulfilled Kamsa’s desire by taking lotus-eyed Krsna to Mathura.

“Is he going to use our flesh to offer funeral oblations for his master, who was so satisfied with his service?” As the women were speaking in this way, Uddhava appeared, having finished his early-morning duties.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.46.47-49

That is the end of chapter 46 and chapter 47 we will not enter at this time.

Just by hearing Srimad-Bhagavatam, being in the association with devotees, by being in Vrndavan, by worshipping the Deity, by chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra sincerely, if we can just taste one half of a drop from that ocean, so it can descent. Srila Krsnadas Kaviraja Gosvami says that that one drop is enough to drown the world.

Let us turn to the Govardhan, may he bless us by his glance to get a glimpse in the hearts of these devotees in full prema and full separation from Krsna.

And we can pray for others, too.
Giriraja Maharaja ki jaya! Giriraja-dharan ki jaya! Jaya jaya Sri Radhe-e-e Syam!

Sacinandana Swami – Day 6

Sacinandana Swami

Welcome to our next day of Govardhan Retreat and katha.

Like a beautiful palace with a closed door the dhama also requires a key to grant us entrance. This is chanting the Name. According to Sri Bhaktivinoda Thakura it is chanting the Holy Name with loving affection.

“Dham is Nam”. That is the very first manifestation for the sincere sadhaka.

You remember, Indra was very afraid. He offended Krsna to a very bad degree.

Krsna does not forget such an offense to a devotee – He waits till this person goes to that devotee and gets forgiveness, satisfies this devotee and his followers.

There are six offenses acc. to Skanda Purana and the worst is to _kill_ a devotee – and Indra did this worst attempt. Indra was not sure what to do till Sacidevi, his wife also worked on his consciousness and helped him understand. He came on foot!

He was very very afraid. He just did not know what Krsna would do now. Now He would deal with Indra directly. It was scary. It is described Indra was trembling with fear.

Krsna in His enigmatic way made clear that yes, Indra can speak. Indra wanted to give a sign he no longer thinks of himself as the Lord of the universe. You have to give a visual sign you are sorry. Indra put his crown at the feet of Krsna. Please remember, that Indra was not elected by 33000000 demigods – Krsna installed him. I.e. Indra knew that only thanks to Krishna h was put into that position.

Previously Indra, who was not unintelligent, had seen how Brahma had displeased Krsna and Krsna expanded Himself. Indra, i.e., was very well aware of the wonderful potency of this smiling prince of Vraja. So when he was offering obeisances his intoxication of pride was gone. He was searching Krishna’s eyes to know what would Krsna do: would He throw thunderbolts? And please hear how Krsna responded, it will endear Krsna to all the devotees.

“O king of the demigods! I am moved to see your unprecedented affection to me! I offended you by stopping your sacrifice.

Krsna is ksama-sila – very forgiving and tolerant.

You must remember that Krsna is the father of all living entities – aham bija pradah pita. When the child kicks, the parents think, “Oh, my child develops nice and strong”. Or when the child kicks in the womb, the mother is happy. Krsna does not have any envy or malice to anyone. He is very very disturbed when His devotee is hurt, but He does not Himself become hurt.

He does not have these psychological troubles of insecure people…

…[story of Buddha of not accepting insulting words]…

akrodha paramananda nityananda ray

abhimana sunya nitai nagare beday

1) The noble Lord Nityananda Ray is never angry, for He is the personification of supreme transcendental bliss. Devoid of any concept of false ego, Nitai wanders about the town.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => MSVA 2: Akrodha Paramananda “Supreme Bliss that is Never Angry”

So He is not like us. When Krsna stopped his sacrifice, Indra became so mad that he forgot that this is the same person who put me in this position.

When you eat and your teeth cut your lips – will you take a hammer and knock your own teeth? No. And so Krsna, even if someone turns away from Him, never turns back. So if someone repents and feels sorry, Krsna immediately manifests His ksama-sila, forgiving nature.

Even if one commits the most abominable action, if he is engaged in devotional service he is to be considered saintly because he is properly situated in his determination.>>> Ref. VedaBase => Bg 9.30

In other words, he wants the right thing. He is weak, but he wants the right thing. This is so amazing. Krsna wanted Arjuna to take drums and go to all the towns and villages and proclaim this.

I feel this is our duty as devotees to display at least a little bit this quality of Krsna’s forgiveness. I am saying “a little” because we cannot equal Krsna.

As soon as someone does or says something we do not accept immediately we are ready to judge him and say bad things behind their back.

… Rama forgave the crow…

Indra prays:

How… could there exist in You the symptoms of an ignorant person — such as greed, lust, anger and envy — which are produced by one’s previous involvement in material existence and which cause one to become further entangled in material existence? And yet as the Supreme Lord You impose punishment to protect religious principles and curb down the wicked.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.27.5

You are the father and spiritual master of this entire universe, and also its supreme controller. You are insurmountable time, imposing punishment upon the sinful for their own benefit. Indeed, in Your various incarnations, selected by Your own free will, You act decisively to remove the false pride of those who presume themselves masters of this world.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.27.6

When a doctor cures your fever, do you take a stone and strike him on the head? No, you know, he removes your fever. When you see your guru is chastising you, you should not go against him with bow and arrows, but understand, “This is for MY relief”. It comes from a different ground, from a different place.

Indra spoke many prayers, but I do not repeat  - they were still a little tainted with insincerity, fear. Finally, Indra understood – my Krsna is ksama-sila, He forgives like a father. With tears he says, Please forgive me! With full sincerity. Then Krsna speaks very openly. “But how could you do this?” – “It was anger which totally destroyed everything in me”, – “But I am your master, I do not understand how my servant can do such things?” – “I was proud…”. But Krsna wanted to go deeper. He wanted Indra to go deeper, think and avoid it in the future. “There may be pride in my devotee, but you have intelligence and can see this?” Does this ever happen to you? But then you can use your intelligence and step back,  “My God, I am proud” and stop it. Indra: “Yes, I have intelligence, but it was destroyed by anger…”

So Indra was just won over by Krsna and he says:

tvayesanugrhito ‘smi

O Lord, You have shown mercy to me by shattering my false pride and defeating my attempt [to punish Vrndavana]. To You, the Supreme Lord, spiritual master and Supreme Soul, I have now come to seek Your shelter.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.27.14

He is now ready to take full shelter, accept Krsna as the supreme master.

My dear devotees, a conditioned soul’s journey stops when he can pray like Indra “Now I have come to take shelter in You”.

And do you know what Krsna do when Indra said these prayers? What Krsna did when Arjuna came to surrener to Him? Krsna smiled.

Indra submitted to the Lord. He admitted he became furiously angry and attacked, so now Krsna reveals His mind. Krsna will never speak to someone insincere.

“Krsna does not speak nonsense. He spoke to Indra with the deep like a cloud [ - did you ever hear spiritual truths yelled at you at high pitched voice : - ) - ], resonant voice of the Supreme Lord:”

5) His deeds are sweet, His liberating is sweet, His stealing is sweet, His love-sports are sweet, His oblations are sweet, His tranquility is sweet—Everything is sweet about the Emperor of Sweetness!

8) His gopas are sweet, His cows are sweet,  His staff is sweet, His creation is sweet,  His trampling is sweet, His fruitfulness is sweet — Everything is sweet about the Emperor of Sweetness!

>>> Ref. VedaBase => MSVA 1: Madhurastakam

After speaking those verses, Krsna sent Indra back and said “Please keep that in your mind”. Later Krsna came with Satyabhama on Garuda to take the parijata tree and Indra gave Krsna battle. Indra (Sri VCT) said, “I am like a cow, if I am struck once, I come back again”. Like the monkeys stealing from the fruit sellers. Conditioned soul’s tendency.

-I can’t believe my eyes – just look – a Surabhi has just arrived! Just see to the right!-

Then Krsna turns to Surabhi who came from the heavenly planets. Surabhi affectionately turned for some attention. It was a (hoch brisant, heikel) highly sensitive subject.

Mother Surabhi said: O Krsna, Krsna, greatest of mystics! O Soul and origin of the universe! You are the master of the world, and by Your grace, O infallible Lord, we have You as our master.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.27.19

“This Indra is not fit to be our king!” This was clearly a political statement. Universal politics. Surabhi wanted to enthrone Krsna as the emperor of the universe. “It is not our independent desire:”

“As ordered by Lord Brahma, we shall perform Your bathing ceremony to coronate You as Indra. O Soul of the universe

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.27.21

You know where it happened? Govinda kunda! All necessary for the coronation of Krsna was done. Brahma acted as the main pujari.

… It was Brahma’s instruction to install Krsna as the leader all cows …

/ Brahma, the Four Kumaras, Uma, Mahadeva, Tamburu, Kartikeya, Narada, and Savita attended Krsna’sabhiseka. Many exalted rsis and sages beautified the assembly The effulgent wives of the demigods such as Arundhati also visited. The celestial Apsaras like Urvasi watching from the sky enhanced the festival with their splendid forms and qualities.

Govardhana, with the limbs of his own body, provided an elegant throne made of smooth stones and jewels. The demigod Varuna personally held a fine white umbrella over Krsna’s head, which had a fringe of hanging pearls that appeared like falling raindrops. Vayu, his arm trembling in ecstatic devotion, stood beside the Lord fanning Him with a camara whisk. The full moon assumed the form of a mirror made of jewels.

Pancajanya, the Lord’s conchshell, sanctified the atmosphere with loud sounds. The effulgent Sudarshan cakraexpanded as many lamps to illumine all directions. Krsna’s white lotus flower expanded into many white umbrellas to shield the Lord. Kaumodik, the Lord’s club who is honored for his strength, stood like a jeweled pillar for the bathing ceremony.

The personified forms of the sacred oceans, rivers, ponds, and lakes came with pots of water to bathe Krsna. Mother Bhumi collected the finest quality earth in a box covered with seven jewels. Placing the box on a jeweled plate, she slowly approached Krsna and offered it to Him. The best herbs and medicinal plants personified presented themselves for Krsna’s service. Great sacred trees such as the banyan and peepul manifested in person to give Krsna leaves containing the five types of tastes in golden pots studded with gems of lapis lazuli. The forest gods from the ten directions brought water pots covered with coconuts and various delicious fruits. The Lord of the mountains brought exotic gems and jewels.

The nine jewels, the eight yogic siddhis, the best jewels like cintamani, kamadhenu, and desire-trees all assumed charming forms to worship the Lord. Standing at a distance, they faced Krsna with folded hands. The goddess of Mt. Sumeru offered a golden cloth, and the goddess of the Himalayas presented splendid necklaces. The goddess of Gandhamadana Mountain brought golden lotuses from Manasarovara Lake and personally strung a garland for Krsna.

The goddess of the Malaya Mountain delivered the best quality sandal-wood. Grinding it on a stone from Govardhana, she made a smooth fragrant paste for Krsna. Without the knowledge of her husband, Parvati handed Krsna a gorgeous jeweled necklace. With their own hands, the Sapta-Rsis plucked fresh lotus buds from theMandakini River to offer to the Lord. When needed for service, the sun god made the lotus flowers blossom for the Lord. The shining of the moon appeared as a mirror.

Agni offered an artistically designed golden incense pot with a hanging fringe made of coral. The best qualityaguru scent burned in the pot, and rose into the sky through its thousands of holes. Garuda expanded his effulgent golden wings to form a protective canopy oVer the Lord. All the kings of the snakes fanned their hoods to serve as jeweled flags to surround the bathing platform.

The various mantras and prayers used for abhiseka like purusa-sukta and sri-sukta took personal forms to chant in alternating low and high tones. The surabhi cow contributed the panca-gavya and Lord Brahma provided the panca-amrta. Airavata (Indra’s elephant carrier) filled the gem-studded bathing pots with water from the Akash-Ganga, which he carried in his trunk. The demigods in the sky vibrated instrumental music.

The celestial ladies showered flowers from Nanda-kanana while intoxicated Gandharvas, Caranas, Kimpurusas, Siddhas, Sadhyas, and Vidyadharas joyfully danced in the sky. All the Apsaras appeared to please Krsna with a special drama. They conveyed the meaning of the play with various dance steps and facial expressions. Upon beholding the elegant form of Syamasundara, the famous Apsara Urvasi felt enchanted and devoted herself to the Lord./

Surabhi showered Krsna from her udders. On this day Krsna, who was previously known as Abhirama (beautiful), became known as Govinda – one who protects the cows and senses of His devotees. Indra said: “O lifter of the great mountain of Govardhana! Although previously known as Abhirama (beautiful and pleasing). You will now be known by Me name of Govinda, which Your devotees will regularly chant. Go means tending and caring for cows. O Lord! From today, everyone will call You Govinda.”

On that day there was  big harinama festivala, with apsaras singing and dancing, flowers showered from the heaven. Sukadeva Gosvami says:

Tumburu, Narada and other Gandharvas, along with the Vidyadharas, Siddhas and Caranas, came there to sing the glories of Lord Hari, which purify the entire world. And the wives of the demigods, filled with joy, danced together in the Lord’s honor.

The most eminent demigods chanted the praises of the Lord and scattered wonderful showers of flowers all around Him. All three worlds felt supreme satisfaction, and the cows drenched the surface of the earth with their milk.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.27.25

O Pariksit, beloved of the Kuru dynasty, upon the ceremonial bathing of Lord Krsna, all living creatures, *even those cruel by nature, became entirely free of enmity*.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.27.27

The holy name reverberated throughout the universe. Everyone became happy. We in the Hare Krsna movement must become expert in spreading the holy names of Krsna. I request to think today of your role in this.

After this all the demigods left (except one). Everyone was happy by this sankirtan.

A little while ago Queen of England was asked to come to our Avanti school and reveal the picture of Lord Gauranga dancing in the Jharikhanda forest. Queen Elizabeth asked, “Oh, what is the gentleman doing here?” :) The devotees said, “He is singing the holy names and spreading the holy names even to the animals, pacifying even their cruel nature.” “Very good!” – said the Queen. In the February we are asked to give a seminar on pacifying the cruel and envious nature of the people in this world.

/However, Indra and Surabhi remained behind for a moment. After the four-headed one and all the demigods departed, Krsna addressed the fearless intelligenit Indra. In a happy humorous mood, Krsna said, “Is your anger now pacified? Tell me truthfully/

I want that after this devotees see NO OTHER shelter except Krsna!

/ I did not subdue your anger out of revenge or enmity. But I wanted to show how your actions were full of false pride. By mature I cannot bear to see My own devotees possessing false pride. It is well known that such persons deserve to be punished by Me.

“O Indra, it was out of love that I stoped your sacrifice. 0 subduer of your enemies, inner and outer! It does mot suit you to maintain envy toward Me. Now return to Svarga and enjoy your position. But please do not become carried away by your wealth and loose your intelligence again.”/

Krsna looked at him. Dressed in an new golden coronation glimmering dress. He looked most beautiful. He returned to Vrndavana. It seemed as if He had just returned after a moment’s absence.

As He walked to  Vrndavan the sakhas who witnessed the demigod worship festival, came out of the hiding and said, “He sakha, that was just wonderful!” And they embraced Him, and joked, and wrestled… But that is all another narration which we will discuss at another time :-)

Now Surabhi puja. Please all turn towards the Giriraj and see the scene, how we will worship Surabhi. Maybe some of us have also a good reason to turn to Krsna’s forgiving nature… We will see the aratik to our representative of Surabhi. We will pray to say a good word for us to Krsna and we will sing nicely.
Hare Krsna…

Madhavananda – Day 6

Sravanam-kirtanam versus Manu-samhita

Madhavananda Prabhu

This is such a deep pastime it is difficult to cover it completely, we can just touch the peaks of it.

The sadhana of the yajna-patnis has been described:

SB 10.23.23

prayah-sruta-priyatamodaya-karna-purair

yasmin nimagna-manasas tam athaksi-randraih

antah pravesya su-ciram parirabhya tapam

prajnam yathabhimatayo vijahur narendra

O ruler of men, for a long time those brahmana ladies had heard about Krsna, their beloved, and His glories had become the constant ornaments of their ears. Indeed, their minds were always absorbed in Him. Through the apertures of their eyes they now forced Him to enter within their hearts, and then they embraced Him within for a long time. In this way they finally gave up the pain of separation from Him, just as sages give up the anxiety of false ego by embracing their innermost consciousness.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.24

The word tapa in this verse may means also ‘distress’, or ‘heat’ – of separation. This verse shows how the yajna-patnis have attained the shelter of Krishna’s loturs fee. It reminds me of the verse from SB6 which it is said describes the attitude we should have in our practice:

ajata-paksa iva mataram khagah

stanyam yatha vatsatarah ksudh-artah

priyam priyeva vyusitam visanna

mano ‘ravindaksa didrksate tvam

O lotus-eyed Lord, as baby birds that have not yet developed their wings always look for their mother to return and feed them, as small calves tied with ropes await anxiously the time of milking, when they will be allowed to drink the milk of their mothers, or as a morose wife whose husband is away from home always longs for him to return and satisfy her in all respects, I always yearn for the opportunity to render direct service unto You.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 6.11.26

It describes the three levels of hankering for Krsna. Bhativinoda Thakura says this is should be our attitude in our Nama-bhajana – like a baby bird, who cannot fly and is dependant on the parents.

The word vishanna (morose) is cognate with the word visha, for  ”poison” – that is how a wife longs to serve her husband.

Yesterday the beautiful form of Krsna was described. He welcomed, said He is disturbed they brought such heavy burdens, helped to take them down.

SB 10.23.25

svagatam vo maha-bhaga

asyatam karavama kim

yan no didrksaya prapta

upapannam idam hi vah

 [Lord Krsna said:] Welcome, O most fortunate ladies. Please sit down and make yourselves comfortable. What can I do for you? That you have come here to see Me is most appropriate.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.25

The commentators say Krsna did not welcome the yajna-patnis properly, telling them asyatam – “sit down”, which cuts all the formalities.

In Bhagavatarka-marici-mala Sri Bhaktivinod Thakura expands on SB 10.23.26

nanv addha mayi kurvanti

kusalah svartha-darsinah

ahaituky avyavahitam

bhaktim atma-priye yatha

Certainly expert personalities, who can see their own true interest, render unmotivated and uninterrupted devotional service directly unto Me, for I am most dear to the soul.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.26

Why such a formal address now? Sri Visvanatha says that although Krsna was very moved by the yajna-patnis prema, the lila-sakti moved to bring out some aisvarya in His mind. He sends them home.

In CC Krsnadasa Kaviraja says: “aisvarya sithila preme” – aisvarya shrinks prema.

prana-buddhi-manah-svatma

darapatya-dhanadayah

yat-samparkat priya asams

tatah ko nv aparah priyah

It is only by contact with the self that one’s vital breath, intelligence, mind, friends, body, wife, children, wealth and so on are dear. Therefore what object can possibly be more dear than one’s own self?

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.27

You should thus return to the sacrificial arena, because your husbands, the learned brahmanas, are householders and need your assistance to finish their respective sacrifices.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.28

Very interesting and important verse for our discussion. Krsna is sending them back (yajna cannot be carried out without the wives). “Now go home ON MY ORDER and then you will see me in that function”. The exact same worse was told to the gopis. And the patnis said:

sri-patnya ucuh

maivam vibho ‘rhati bhavan gaditum nr-samsam

satyam kurusva nigamam tava pada-mulam

prapta vayam tulasi-dama padavasrstam

kesair nivodhum atilanghya samasta-bandhun

The wives of the brahmanas replied: O almighty one, please do not speak such cruel words. Rather, You should fulfill Your promise that You always reciprocate with Your devotees in kind.  Now that we have attained Your lotus feet, we simply wish to remain here in the forest so we may carry upon our heads the garlands of tulasi leaves that fall from Your lotus feet. We are ready to give up all material relationships.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.29

They quoted sastra, “One who comes to Your lotus feet does not come back”:

Sri Visvanatha: “29. The wives  speak  just as the gopis endowed with the greatest prema spoke to Krsna before the rasa dance. “You should not speak such harsh words (nrsamsam).  The Vedas (nigama) say “na sa punar avartate”  (he does not return, having attained your feet.). Make you own words true (mam eve ye prapadyante  tams  tathaiva  bhajamy aham).”

“He Arindama, conqueror of enemies, vanquish all the obstacles that prevent us from attaining you!”

Krsna says:

sravanad darsanad dhyanan

mayi bhavo ‘nukirtanat

na tatha sannikarsena

pratiyata tato grhan

It is by hearing about Me, seeing My Deity form, meditating upon Me and chanting My names and glories that love for Me develops, not by physical proximity. Therefore please go back to your homes.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.34

Association is not physical:

girirajo hare rupam

     sriman govardhano girih

tasya darsana-matrena

     naro yati krtarthatam

Glorious Govardhana Hill, the king of mountains, is the person form of Lord Krsna. Simply by *seeing* it, a person attains the supreme goal of life.

“Garga-samhita”

The mosquito is very close to the king. Does the king appreciate it? The association is on the platform of the heart. Externally Krsna acts very harshly.

[our friend Nrsimhananda moved into the temple, the parent started a campaign, Srila Prabhupada called him and told him “Go home”, he started crying – “Go and cook vegetarian form” very informally Srila Prabhupada initiated him with the name Nrisimhananda] This is a very deep principle – it is not with the physical association with the guru and even with the movement [that one associates] – there is a story about Srila Prabhupada eating moori on a plane and in a bizarre way the stewardess snatched and ate some and developed some service mood. The part of the story that not many devotees heart is about book distributors in some remote village finding a lady with Krsna’s pictures in her home – “How did this happen”, – “Before retiring I was a stewardess and…” – so she got the mercy.

If someone has a sincere desire… Krsna will make the arrangements. … Like a pressure cooker gradually gathering steam.

Srila Sukadeva Gosvami said: Thus instructed, the wives of the brahmanas returned to the place of sacrifice. The brahmanas did not find any fault with their wives, and together with them they finished the sacrifice.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.34

Sri Visvanatha: The yajna-patnis went back and the gopis didn’t – but both obtained the supreme prema.

Jiva Gosvami comments: “The brahmanas completed the sacrifice with their wives, who had received the mercy of the Lord. Because the Lord disregarded their immediate request, the fault in the sacrifice was removed and became endowed with all good qualities.”

In Gopal-campu he comments that when the patnis returned with the empty pots, they found the pots full of jewels (like the fruit sellers).

The brahmanas then began to lament:

SB 10.23.39

drstva strinam bhagavati

krsne bhaktim alaukikim

atmanam ca taya hinam

anutapta vyagarhayan

Taking note of their wives’ pure, transcendental devotion for Lord Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and seeing their own lack of devotion, the brahmanas felt most sorrowful and began to condemn themselves.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.40

Sri Visvanatha in Sarartha-darsini says something amazing:

10.23.39

tataçca svabhäryä api gurüniva mänayasto bhaktirahitamätmänaà vyanindannityäha, dåñöeti. alaukikéà lokeñvasambhaväm. –

“Though the women were their wives,  they regarded them as their gurus, and they criticized themselves since they had no devotion. The bhakti of their wives was impossible to see in ordinary society (alaukikam).”

Then they speak verse which I like very much in this chapter:

dhig janma nas tri-vrd yat tad

dhig vratam dhig bahu-jnatam

dhik kulam dhik kriya-daksyam

vimukha ye tv adhoksaje

 [The brahmanas said:] To hell with our threefold birth, our vow of celibacy and our extensive learning! To hell with our aristocratic background and our expertise in the rituals of sacrifice! These are all condemned because we were inimical to the transcendental Personality of Godhead.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.40

- because we have become PROUD.

The same prayer that Kunti devi utters:

janmaisvarya-sruta-sribhir

edhamana-madah puman

naivarhaty abhidhatum vai

tvam akincana-gocaram

My Lord, Your Lordship can easily be approached, but only by those who are materially exhausted. One who is on the path of [material] progress, trying to improve himself with respectable parentage, great opulence, high education and bodily beauty, cannot approach You with sincere feeling.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 1.8.26

“Do you have any problem” – “Yes, I am too aristocratic.” – Anything else? – “I am too rich” [how many of us pray so?:-) , and I don’t know how many ladies would say this:] – “Another problem I have is I am too beautiful” :-) )

“These women have never undergone the purificatory rites of the twice-born classes, nor have they lived as brahmacaris in the asrama of a spiritual master, nor have they executed austerities, speculated on the nature of the self, followed the formalities of cleanliness or engaged in pious rituals. Nevertheless, they have firm devotion for Lord Krsna, whose glories are chanted by the exalted hymns of the Vedas and who is the supreme master of all masters of mystic power. We, on the other hand, have no such devotion for the Lord, although we have executed all these processes.”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.43, SB 10.23.44, SB 10.23.43-44

“These ladies never got second initiation. They never lived in their gurus’ asramas, they never studied sastra very deeply, but they got love for Krsna.” Through hearing and chanting.

This is an important point. In all religions, Sri Bhaktivinod Th. Says there are internal and external persons, the external ones are called sanistha in the language of Baladeva Vidyabhusana, they have more faith in the external varnasrama rules, “We shall go to hell if we don’t follow all these rules”.

But:

SB 3.33.7

aho bata sva-paco ‘to gariyan

yaj-jihvagre vartate nama tubhyam

tepus tapas te juhuvuh sasnur arya

brahmanucur nama grnanti ye te

Oh, how glorious are they whose tongues are chanting Your holy name! Even if born in the families of dog-eaters, such persons are worshipable. Persons who chant the holy name of Your Lordship must have executed all kinds of austerities and fire sacrifices and achieved all the good manners of the Aryans. To be chanting the holy name of Your Lordship, they must have bathed at holy places of pilgrimage, studied the Vedas and fulfilled everything required.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 3.33.7

This is Srila Prabhupada’s mood. In the comments from this verse it shows that even the dog-eaters by chanting the holy name has “performed all rituals, taken all the baths…”

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura comments that the chanting of the holy name of the Lord has special significance that distinguishes it from the Vedic ritualistic ceremonies of atonement for severe, more severe or most severe sinful actions. There are twenty types of religious scriptures called dharma-sastras, beginning with the Manu-samhita and Parasara-samhita, but herein it is stressed that although one may become free from the reactions of the most sinful activities by following the religious principles of these scriptures, this cannot promote a sinful man to the stage of loving service to the Lord. On the other hand, chanting the holy name of the Lord even once not only frees one immediately from the reactions of the greatest sins but also raises one to the platform of rendering loving service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is described as uttamasloka because He is famous for His glorious activities. Thus one serves the Lord by remembering His form, His attributes and pastimes. Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura explains that this is all possible simply by chanting the Lord’s holy name because of the Lord’s omnipotence. What cannot be achieved through the performance of Vedic rituals can be easily achieved through the chanting of the Lord’s holy name.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 6.2.11

Our process is not the process of the yajna-brahmanas. In a letter SRila Prabhupada writes:

“We do not want all these rituals. Chanting Hare Krishna is our only business. According to the Manu-samhita you are all mlecchas and yavanas. You cannot touch the Manu-samhita,

[ - So much for Manu-samhita study.-]

what to speak of translating it. So if you try to follow the Manu-samhita then you become a mleccha and yavana and your career is finished.”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => From: Tamal Krishna - SL_770519_A1

[Jagannatha worship - one towel - from LA early days story – we did not include it into our magazine out of fear :-) ]

One devotee got his right hand blown off in a war – devotees said “you cannot get a Brahmin initiation, you can’t wrap the thread around your right thumb” – Srila Prabhupada said, “Wrap it around your left thumb” :-)

…With the return of the patnis the brahmanas regained their intelligence and condemned their ‘karma-vartmasu’

Let us offer our obeisances unto Lord Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. His intelligence is never bewildered, whereas we, confused by His power of illusion, are simply wandering about on the paths of fruitive work.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 10.23.50

Brahma-vaivarta-purana gives some interesting details about the destination of the brahma-patnis.

     The brähmaëas’ wives said: O child, we do not wish any ordinary boon. We desire only Your lotus feet. Please give us service to You. Give us sincere devotion to You, devotion that is very difficult to attain.

Text 52

Text 53

     çré-kåñëaù karuëä-nidhiù

     Hearing the brähmaëas’ wives’ words, Lord Kåñëa, who is the master of the three worlds and an ocean of mercy, and who was surrounded by the gopa boys, said, “Yes. So be it.”

     Then Lord Kåñëa accepted the brähmaëas’ wives offering of delicious foods sweet like nectar. He ate it and He had the boys also eat.

And after that:

     When Lord Kåñëa and the boys had finished eating, the brähmaëas’ wives saw descending from the sky a beautiful golden chariot, . . .

. . . splendid with jewel mirrors, jewel furniture, jewel pillars, jewel domes, . . .

. . . glorious like a hundred moons, beautiful, traveling as fast as the mind, filled with splendid liberated associates of the Lord, associates decorated with forest garlands!!*,

 . . . wearing yellow garments and jewel ornaments, dark, handsome, in the full bloom of youth, . . .

. . . having two arms, *!!holding flutes!!* in their hands, dressed as gopa boys, and their hair decorated with peacock feathers and guïjä.

62: “The brahmanas’ wives at once left their human forms and became liberated gopis. They bowed down before Lord Krsna and went to Goloka, where they yearned to go.”

You may say, but the SB says Krsna sent them back – how can you say they went to Goloka and became gopis?

…[different Mahabharatas, divya-yugas – one possible answer]…

But Brahma-vaivarta-purana gives another answer:

Text 63

haris chayam vinirmaya

     tasam ca visnu-mayaya

prasthapayam asa grhan

     brahmananam svayam vibhuh

 “    Then, employing His yogamaya potency, Lord Krsna created shadow forms of the wives and placed them in the brahmanas’ homes.”

The only difference the brahmanas notices was that the ladies became more diligent, dutiful, beautiful.

The yajna-brahmanas did not have proper faith in Krsna. That is our problem in our bhajan.

Gaur Govinda Svami says in a lecture, “How can we develop sraddha, faith? By loud sankirtan. By hearing, chanting the brahma-patnis developed faith and their husbands by attachment to rituals did not. Never feel desperate… there is all optimism. In my tour in America I have seen pessimism. My Guru Maharaj has sowed the seed” – now the process is Nama-sankirtan.
